Randy AuBuchon used acrylic paints to show support to his favourite hockey team.
Red Deerians may see AuBuchon driving around town with a blue and orange racing stripes on his Chrysler, as the Oilers gear up to play Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final in Edmonton on Friday.
"I'm just trying to keep the spirit going for the Oilers," AuBuchon said while wearing an Edmonton Oilers T-shirt on Thursday.
"I'm a big fan – ever since the 1980s."
Using small tubes of acrylic paint, it took AuBuchon about three hours to paint each side of his vehicle.
The Oilers currently trail the Florida Panthers 3-2 in the seven-game series that will determine the 2024 Stanley Cup champion. Edmonton lost the first three games, which led many to believe that the series was all but over.
"When they went down 0-3, my first thought was, 'Trouble.' But they've been able to come back when they've been behind. So far, so good," AuBuchon said.
But after a massive 8-1 win in Game 4 and a closer 5-3 victory in Game 5, the Oilers are right back in the series. Only one team in National Hockey League history has come back from down 0-3 in the Stanley Cup Final and won: the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs. Three other NHL teams have come back from 0-3 deficits and won playoffs series: the 1975 New York Islanders, 2010 Philadelphia Flyers and 2014 Los Angeles Kings.
If the Oilers win Game 6, then Game 7 would be played in Florida on Monday evening.
"The Oilers have come back so much this year. They were in second-last place in the league back in November and now they're in the Stanley Cup Final," said AuBuchon.
"They've been behind in a lot of games and series in these playoffs, but they always seem to come back. If they can do it, it'd be absolutely fantastic to see them win four in a row."
AuBuchon predicts the Oilers will win by two goals in Game 6. Puck drop for the game is set for 6 p.m.
