LETTER - Money spent on Courtenay pedestrian bridge could be better used elsewhere

A multi-use bridge proposed at 6th Street would provide a cyclist/pedestrian connection between downtown Courtenay and Simms Park. Graphic supplied

Dear editor,

A $6.9 million bridge for pedestrians and cyclists?!

Appalling!

It seems the mayor and city councillors have lost sight of the difference between wants and needs. How is an ‘active transportation’ bridge a ‘need’ when there are 200+ unhoused citizens? Looks very much like a ‘want’ for some kind of legacy they can point to and say “we made that happen.” Not a great legacy folks, more like something to be ashamed of: a blatant disregard for addressing the housing crisis at hand.

Stop approving so-called affordable housing and start approving subsidized or co-op or not-for-profit housing! This bridge proposal and project is not something to be proud of. Think of how far that money could have gone for those in need.
