Property crime in Courtenay’s downtown spiked in 2023 quarter

Downtown Courtenay sees disproportionate rise in police files compared to the city as a whole

Property crime increased by nearly half in downtown Courtenay this year compared to the same period in 2022.

The type of crime in Courtenay’s downtown rose by 42 per cent for the period of January-to-March year over year, according to an RCMP report shown at Courtenay’s June 14 council meeting.

The city’s downtown saw an increase of 63 files on property crime compared to the same quarter last year, adding up to a new total of 214. Meanwhile, some other areas of the city decreased, and the total number of files across the city remained relatively unchanged, increasing by 6 files overall.

The west division of Courtenay – loosely defined as south of 17th Street and north of Comox Valley Parkway – saw the biggest drop in files on property crime.

The west area saw 47 fewer files year over year, for a total of 131.

Across all listed neighbourhoods in the Courtenay report, the number of files on property crime increased by one per cent year over year, from 573 to 579.
