A Comox doctor has been recognized by the BC College of Family Physicians as one of the top family physicians in the province.
Dr. Jonathan Kerr received the My Family Doctor Award at a ceremony in Vancouver on Thursday, May 16.
The award is based upon nominations from patients.
As described on the BCCF website, “The BCCFP My Family Doctor Award provides British Columbians with the opportunity to recognize and honour their own family doctors, celebrating the doctor-patient relationship that supports good health. Five family physicians are selected annually – one from each health authority.”
“That was the really neat thing about this award - I got notified that my patients nominated me, and as a family doctor, what’s better than that?” said Kerr. “It’s pretty special and really quite meaningful.”
He does not know which of his patients submitted nominations, but is thankful for all who did.
Kerr said the awards ceremony was a special night, with some high-profile dignitaries on hand.
“It was really neat - it was nice to meet all the other award winners… and there were some special guests,” he said. “Health Minister Adrian Dix was there, as well as Premier Eby, and they both spoke and posed for pictures afterwards, so it really made for a special evening.”
The BCCFP detailed the reasoning behind Kerr’s selection as the My Family Doctor for Vancouver Island.
“At the heart of Dr. Kerr’s practice lies an unwavering commitment to patient-centered care. His patients laud him as a compassionate listener, a meticulous caregiver, and a steadfast ally in their journey toward wellness. With each appointment, Dr. Kerr ‘truly listens’ and ‘strives to bring a positive outcome in all situations.’
“Driven by a passion for continuous improvement, Dr. Kerr embraces each day as an opportunity for growth and self-reflection. Whether as a father, husband, doctor, elected official, athlete, or community member, he remains steadfast in his pursuit of excellence, embodying the ethos of a lifelong learner. As one of Dr. Kerr’s nominators states, Dr. Kerr ‘truly stands out in his profession.’”
“Family doctors play such an important role in the health and well-being of people across British Columbia, helping navigate life’s biggest joys and biggest challenges,” said Eby, in a press release. “On BC Family Doctor Day, I want to express my deepest gratitude for the care, compassion, and unwavering dedication that all of B.C.’s family doctors provide, while recognizing the invaluable contributions they make to the communities they serve.”
“Family doctors are vital in providing essential primary care to people in British Columbia,” added Dix. “Their dedication and commitment to their patients’ health and wellness is deeply appreciated. I want to thank every one of them for choosing family practice and their contributions to the profession in a wide variety of ways. Congratulations to this year’s award recipients!”
