The staff at Victoria Beacon Hill Children’s Farm were a little busy on Monday (March 2) evening as the goat Cookies and Cream gave birth to three baby goats and Snow Drift gave birth to four.
The staff is excited about the arrival of the new babies as they are getting ready to open the farm to the public on March 12.
When Victoria News visited the farm to see the new members, many of them were not shy to come and say hello. A couple of them, however, were still getting used to the new world.
“They will be ready to slowly visit some visitors,” said farm manager Claudia Laube.
Along with the new goats, visitors to the farm can see a variety of animals, including pigs, budgies, finches, parakeets, chickens, guinea pigs, doves, goats, donkeys, alpacas, ducks and the farm cat.
Apart from the seven new members to the farm, the staff is preparing to welcome visitors back with several new improvements. One of the upgrades the visitors will see as they enter the farm is the new Storytime Nook, a permanent gathering space designed for families and children’s groups. The area will provide a comfortable place for storytelling, learning activities and group visits.
Enhancements were also made to the chicken yards, where new planter boxes and low gazing boxes were installed to make the chickens’ environment better.
The upgrades add plants and create more places for chickens to peck and forage, while providing cover from predatory animals like hawks.
Beacon Hill Children’s Farm business manager Diana Teal said that the improvements and newborn animals will help make the upcoming season especially exciting for families and community groups visiting the farm.
The farm is scheduled to open for the season on Thursday, March 12, and visitors will also have the chance to meet the farm’s newest arrivals.
They continue to welcome volunteers for the season, and more information about volunteer opportunities is available on the Beacon Hill Children’s Farm website.
