In a collective effort to celebrate the spirit of Earth Day, the City of Courtenay will be hosting its second annual community cleanup event on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to noon. This initiative aims to inspire environmental stewardship and community engagement while fostering a sense of pride and responsibility for our local environment.

Community volunteers will meet at one of two parks: Harmston Park or Courtenay Air Park - adjacent to the Rotary Sky Park Playground at 10 a.m., rain or shine, for a safety orientation. City staff will distribute trash pickers/grabbers, bags, and gloves. Volunteers are then invited to pick up trash in the area around the park including nearby trails.

Volunteers are encouraged to pre-register at www.courtenay.ca/cleanup.

Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the event.

Mayor Bob Wells said the city is hoping to build on the success of last year’s community cleanup.

“We had a strong turnout last year and positive feedback from participants,” said Wells. “We’re adding a second location this year and hope this will become an annual event going forward. It’s a great way to build community, beautify our parks and trails, and protect the environment.”

Keeping the community’s parks, streets, and sidewalks clean helps keep debris out of the estuary and the ocean.
